Are You In Compliance?

What is an arc flash?

An arc flash is the light and heat produced as a result of an electric current leaving its intended path and traveling from one conductor to another, or to the ground.

An arc blast is the shock-wave produced during an arc flash. While personal protective equipment can protect from the heat and radiation of an arc flash, the flying objects, molten metal, and concussive wave can render PPE ineffective.

Arc flash causes include:

  • Dust or condensation
  • Mishandling of tools
  • Accidental contact
  • Equipment/Material failure
  • Corrosion
  • Faulty installation

Dangers of Arc Flash Exposure

  • Burns/Fire
  • Flying objects
  • Blast pressure/sound blast (over 140 dB)
  • Extreme heat (over 35,000°F)

Complete Protection

Protecting from arc flash hazards requires a range of products including arc flash face shields, insulated rubber gloves, insulated tools, temporary grounding equipment, voltage detectors, and a variety of protective clothing. The garments offered by Stauffer are constructed from inherently fire resistant (FR) materials or FR-treated materials. Arc flash protective clothing ranges from undergarments and shirts, to pants, coveralls, and multi-layered systems.
